Behind the feathers

Our name reflects both science and artistry. Aix honors two of the world’s most extraordinary ducks: The Wood Duck (Aix sponsa) and the Mandarin Duck (Aix galericulata). Rooted in Ancient Greek, the term originally described an unidentified diving bird noted by Aristotle. Pronounced simply as the letter X, the name embodies rarity, elegance, and distinction. Just as these ducks are admired for their beauty, every mount we create aspires to the same level of refinement.

The Artists Behind the Work

At the heart of Aix are two people who have spent their lives paying close attention to the natural world. Tomás and Yaira are both Cuban biologists, both artists, and both deeply in love with wildlife in a way that goes beyond profession. Science gave them a language for understanding nature. Art gave them a way to honor it.

Tomás — The Bird Artist

Long before taxidermy had a name for him, Tomás was already practicing it. As a boy, irresistibly drawn to the wildlife around him, he began experimenting on his own using old-fashioned methods and almost no resources, only determination, natural history books, and an endless curiosity about the natural world. With the remarkable biodiversity of the Caribbean as his classroom and curiosity as his greatest teacher, he worked on birds of all kinds, reptiles, fish, insects, arachnids, crustaceans, and more. Every specimen became a lesson in anatomy, and every field expedition a deeper exploration of ecology and behavior.

Over the years, Tomás became a veterinarian, wildlife researcher, ecologist, taxonomist, and conservationist, always finding his way back to the field and always learning more about how animals are built, how they move, and how they live. Every hour spent in that world now lives in his hands. His mounts reflect a profound respect for the animals they once were. Guided by a lifetime of observation and study, he portrays each subject with exceptional accuracy, authenticity, and attention to detail, preserving not only its appearance, but also a sense of its character and place in the natural world.

Yaira — The Habitat Artist

Yaira builds the world that accompanies each bird back home. Her background as a biologist and conservationist gave her an understanding of natural environments that goes far beyond the visual. She knows not only what a habitat looks like, but how it functions, how it changes, and how it feels.

Her artistic journey began after graduation, when, alongside her work in science, she took a second job at an event decoration studio where everything was handcrafted. For the first time, she worked with clay, foam, textured paper, and fabric, and discovered a natural talent for making things feel real. To her, every sculpted flower or leaf had to look alive; otherwise, something was still missing.

Over the years, she mastered countless materials and techniques, learning how to recreate the textures, densities, colors, and subtle imperfections found in nature. Creativity became part of her everyday work, and she thrived in it. Today, that unique combination of science and artistry allows her to create habitat replicas that are not only visually accurate, but also true to the character and spirit of the natural world.

Our Shared Vision

What We’re Building Together

Partners in both business and life, Aix Taxidermy was born from a shared dream: a place where bird taxidermy is treated as the art form it truly is. No shortcuts, no compromises, only work that we are genuinely proud to put our names on. Each mount is a museum-quality piece that honors the hunter’s story and commands its place in any serious collection. With meticulous attention to detail and a devotion to craftsmanship that runs through everything we do, every trophy that leaves our studio doesn’t just endure for generations, it stands apart. We aim to create pieces that define collections.

Thank you for visiting our studio, we look forward to creating something special for you.
