After retrieving, a bird should be handled with care to avoid damaging or losing any plumage. Click each step to learn more.

Inspect the quality of the feathers on the head, wings, body, and tail. If the tips of the feathers are clipped, a good bird mount is still possible. However, avoid mounting birds with pin or slipping feathers, as well as those with severe dog bite damage.

To prevent blood from staining the feathers, insert small rolls of paper towel into the nostrils and throat of all game birds, especially those with white feathers.

Neck feathers are essential for achieving a visually appealing bird taxidermy, especially in flying poses. Hanging the bird by the neck can damage or dislodge these feathers, affecting the final result.

Please avoid field dressing or gutting a bird if you plan to have it mounted. Measure the body is crucial for an accurate mount.

Keep birds out of direct sunlight before transporting them to our taxidermy shop. If you can’t bring the bird on the day of harvest, carefully place it in a plastic bag and freeze it immediately. Avoid folding the tail when freezing.

Ship your bird. Save a trip

We welcome shipped birds, from all US. However, we do not offer return shipping for completed mounts. These mounts are delicate works of art and can be easily damaged during postal handling. We will not charge deposit until the bird arrive to us.

How to preserve and ship a bird for taxidermy?

  • Plug any bullet holes, the mouth, and the vent with paper towels (if not done in the field). Wrap the legs and head in wet paper towels.
  • Align the plumage and fold the wings, legs, and neck close to the body.
  • Include Federal Migratory Bird Tag and any other pertinent paperwork in Ziploc bags.
  • Place the bird in two or three layers of plastic bags, squeezing out the air. Wrap each bagged bird with tape.
  • Ensure the bird is completely frozen and place it in a Styrofoam cooler surrounded by gel ice packs.
  • Seal the Styrofoam cooler with plenty of tape.
